I think the book Sari is referring to is actually called "One Grain of Rice." Its author is Demi.

Another great math story is "Twelve Circus Rings" by Seymour Chwast (the story is modelled on the 12 Days of Christmas). We read this one to 5th graders and had them invent a mathematically parallel situation, then do the math to figure out how many of each item there were total and do drawings to illustrate.

It was a great project!
