In fact, I think that expectations should be increasing gradually from the day the students first enter third grade. After all, they are gaining more knowledge and maturity and should be ready for more things as the year progresses. My letter home on the first day of school states this. I tell my students that they are now closer to being 4th graders than 2nd graders, so they are "bigger" kids. Your students will handle it fine and will step up to the challenge
