What about a newscast? Put the students in groups and assign (or have them pick) an explorer. Have them write a script and use it in a news cast announcing major events in this explorer's life. Diary- Have them students write "diary entry's" about the explorer's journey. They could start with before they left and how they got the money to go on the journey, etc. They could end with arriving in the new place, what they saw, and how long it took them.
