I don't know how your curriculum is set up, but would it be possible to incorporate the lit. circle activities with the reading series? Even if it was only once in a while, the change might be enough to keep them interested in both types of reading. It could be a nice surprise for them to think they are going to do traditional reading series activities and instead get to do literature circle activities. And it would show them that you listen to their comments and desires.
