I occasionally ask who can make that sentence sound real. They take turns, the "theatrical" volunteer first. Some who never would do it on their own get carried away with it too. Try puppet plays, two kids taking turns reading the parts.
Another thing is to make sure it isn't a "cold read", by explaining that even TV news reporters read through what they will be saying on camera before they actually do the news. Have kids read a sentence silently then look up and tell it.
