In our county, you can take a 2 year leave of absence when you have a baby and many women take that option. In my case, by the time my 2 year leave was up I was having another baby. So I quit for a time and stayed home with my children. When they started school, I started back subbing and eventually moved into a part-time position. That has proven to be the best option for our family. It goes without saying that my husband's salary could provide for us while I was at home and I realize that many women are not in that position.
