We had the same problem but a group of us got together and pulled together a unit that some days challenges the kids. We talk about neighborhoods, make maps of our communities, brochures about jobs in our communities, we use mapquest to locate our homes, enlarge a ctiy street map from around your school and then have them make little houses and put them on the map to mark their home. We still are working out the boring parts but this helped. We also created native americans, colonial and western pioneers, government and symbols. If you need any more ideas I can ask around.
