I agree with the above post. I teach 4th grade and the do have the "sillies" in them. I always tell them that I'm not a boring teacher and do not like to just do work from the book. However, if they are not focusing on an activity, I do what Carol said...immediately give them a large amount of "boring" work and go sit at your desk for about 15 minutes, looking quite perturbed. One good thing about this age is they normally have a bit of a conscience left. They feel bad when the teacher feels bad. The point will get across quickly, I promise.
