Don't put the blame on yourself. The children that were missing should be made aware of what they did caused much distrss. They knew what they were doing. First graders really have no concept of time so they probably thought they were not doing anything wrong. The teacher that dismissed them should have made sure they got to where they were supposed to go because she had them last. You had no way of knowing the moment they left her room.

One question I have is.... didn't you see empty seats??? Usually first graders are so nosy they want to know where everyone is at all times.
