Constructivism
By Melissa

Clip to ScrapBook
I am a Senior in an early childhood education program. I'm using this type of incentive program for multiplication as an example of "what not to do". I have seen many teachers who give the reward of ice cream sundaes at the end of a multiplication unit. This used to seem like a clever idea to me before I understood the concept of extrinsic vs. intrinsic motivation. Instead of introducing multiplication as a new content area, consider a constructivist approach that allows children to connect multiplication back to addition (as repeating). Go away from pre-set deadlines of mastery of facts and allow the children to truly understand this foundational math concept.
