Combinations and permutations
By Joan

Clip to ScrapBook
Combinations and permutations are examples of discrete math that are easily adapted to any grade level. And, you will probably find that you already do them.

The difference between the two:
With combinations we don't put it back, with permutations we do put it back.

Example: Mary has a pink blouse and a yellow blouse. She has a blue skirt and a purple skirt. How many different outfits can Mary make?

I found this site with some sample probems for younger children.

I've also heard that categorizing with venn diagrams is a form of discrete math.
