Book Day

Every year I have a Book Day with my fifth graders. I let students bring in sleeping bags and pillows, as well as some of their favorite books. We break the day up into a number of different activities: extra DEAR time, extra Read Aloud time, discussions of our favorite books ("little kid" and current), extra Writing Workshop, and Battle of the Books Junior (reading quiz game that the kids make up prior to the day).The kids absolutely love it! The variety of activities keeps them engaged, and we learn some interesting things about each other. I usually try to hold this on the day before a vacation, since those days are usually "lost" anyway.
