pencil sharpening craziness

Hi. I had the same problem with kids wanting to sharpen their pencil many times a day! We talk about what a distraction this is for others so... we came up with "pencil sharpening hours". They must sharpen two pencils during the hours posted only (they made a sign)or bring in a small sharpener from home that they can use at any time. They all pretty much brought in a sharpener and it has solved our problem. A couple of times a child w/o a sharpener needed to sharpen a pencil so they just asked a neighbor to borrow one. This has worked wonders in our classroom community. Why didn't I think of this 5 years ago?
