Hope this helps...

Have you tried using any of the free online translator sites? I have found this one to be quite good:

www.free-translator.com

I hope the 5th grader is getting ELD instruction during the day (it's required here in CA). One of my classes is strictly English Learners, and I teach only in English, using SDAIE strategies to reach them.

Also, you can use various computer programs... there's an excellent free interactive phonics program: starfall.com

Be sure to team him/her up with some of your helpful students. You'll be amazed how quickly s/he will pick up the lang. Lots of encouragement and support is needed.... and TIME!

I hope I've been of some help!
