cutting in line
By Cheryl

Clip to ScrapBook
About the third or fourth week of school, I establish permanent teams in my classroom, numbered 1-5. Each day of the week a different team lines up first with the other teams following in order--Monday: 1,2,3,4,5; Tuesday: 2,3,4,5,1--and so on. Although I don't have specific line leaders, each group knows that they will have a turn being first. It doesn't totally eliminate cutting, but there doesn't seem to be much interest in it.
I try to spread my leaders, followers, good students, poor students, and behavior problems among all the teams, so we can also use them for work or study groups when appropriate. Checking teams is also a quick way to make sure everyone is in line after recess or on a field trip.
