my morning routine

I also have the students busy right from the time they sit down. I write a greeting on the board (same location every day) and a brief instruction. Here are the things we do (I vary it from day to day):

- journals (usually 1-2 per week) - the journal question is on the board to be copied
- cursive writing practice (only up till Nov.)
- math puzzle (often centred around basic facts practice)
- "mapping for meaning" exercise- reading a paragraph, underlining details and mapping them

I have some variety but tend to stick to the same types of activities so the students know what to expect. If they finish their work within the 20 minutes, they begin to silent read.

I'm interested in other ideas too!
