I do individualized spelling. I choose words that the students are misspelling in their written work and/or are having difficulty with during reading/writing activities. I have 23 students so I have 23 different spelling lists. It takes some organization, but the students find the words meaningful and it helps me challenge my advanced spellers and increase vocabulary.
Last year my students had ten of their own words. This year 63% of my class came in below grade level and needed more direction and work throughout the week with their words. As a result I decided to do 5 words that everyone in the class has and 5 that are individualized from their writing. The five words do have similiar spelling patters such as word families, diagraphs, vowel pairs, etc.
