I bought spiral notebooks, they're far more durable than anything I've ever made. You can get them for a dime at the beginning of the school year. I also made my kids a Dictionary from plain white paper, stapled 26 pages together and placed them in a folder (parents donate all kinds of things). Each page is marked with letters from the alphabet in capital and lower case. When they ask, "how do you spell...?" I tell them, get your dictionary out. The next time they want to spell that word they only have to look it up in their dictionary. These come in handy during our journal time, I can write words on the board that the kids want spelled and they all have the opportunity to add the words to their dictionary.
