fractions
By Trish

Clip to ScrapBook
When in doubt... eat! I use fruits and vegetables to demonstrate fractions. The students complete a page for each fraction with this prompt: I ate ___ of a _______.
For example- I ate 1/2 of a strawberry.

The teacher models one whole and cutting even parts. The students copy the fraction and food then draw the item and divide with a black line. While they work, I pass out the fraction foods. I usually cut these in advance and only model the fraction once for each fruit.

Ideas include: 1/2 of strawberry, 1/3 of baby carrt, 1/4 of kiwi, 1/6 of orange, 1/8 of celery stalk

another good idea = give students squares of paper and have them fold to show fractions. Be sure to label each folded part!
