I'm not sure what research he was looking at, but I've never heard anything like that before. As a special ed teacher, I teach my students from a phonics basis, along with sight words and some whole language. Children learn so much from their environment, listening to books, and just experiencing text! I can't believe anyone would discourage a parent or care giver from trying to help their child learn! That just sounds crazy to me! It obviously benefits a child to have the teacher and parents on the same page when the child is learning...but discouraging parents all together to help their child become a reader is crazy. Please continue to work with the students you are helping...the one-on-one attention is priceless, especially if they struggle in those areas! Keep up the good work!
