independent reading work
By deb

Clip to ScrapBook
I have a kindergartner who reads on second grade level. He is given an appropriate book to read, along with some small sticky notes. These he places over any words that he has difficulty with. When we meet, we review the
section of the story read and discuss strategies for decoding the unknown words. He then writes the words in a notebook. Sometimes, I have him use the words in sentences or find rhyming words or other practice-related activities. When the story is finished, he re-reads his new words and can read his book to a friend during rest and read, if he so chooses. I may also give him some follow-up
activities. However, his writing skills, while still above the others, are not up to par with his reading, and so I can't rely on written work too much for assessment.
