This is my 6th year in 5th grade after teaching 7 and 8th graders as well as high school and college. Yes, there are cliques in fifth grade as others have mentioned. But, I have seen them in lower grades also. I have to talk to my students each year. Some years it is worse than others and yes, it is mostly girls. It is a hard age for them - just buy a lot of kleenex and be willing to listen to them. If they know they can talk about all of problems created from cliques, they are more open to change. One thing I tell my students is that if there is a rpoblem with another student, they may ask for time to discuss it with my presence or alone (where I can keep on eye on them). This does work.
