5th and 6th Grade combination
By A

Clip to ScrapBook
My administrator has approached me and asked about teaching a 5/6 combo next fall. This is my second year of teaching (all in the 6th grade) and the task feels a bit daunting. It sounds as if I would start the year with 10 6th graders and 20 5th graders. What are your experiences with combination classes? Am I thinking it will be tougher than it really is? How do you manage the curriculum? Do the 6th graders end up feeling stigmatized for being with a lower grader?

Several other important facts: It is unlikely that I would roll-up with my 5th graders. I would probably get some choice about who was placed in the classroom. The transiency rate at my school is close to 50%. (Who I started with would be very different from who I ended up with.)
