1st grade students at my school make candle holders for their parents out of clay. We have terra cotta clay at our school and the students make a ball out of clay and then drop it down to the desk. Then the teacher uses a small candle to make a hole for the candle holder. They then fire them in the kiln and the kids paint them with clay glaze. They turn out very nice.
Another idea: My class is making a cook book. I had each student bring in a favorite family recipe. We had a taste test the day the recipes were due. Students could participate if they wanted. We had about 15 different foods to try.
Another class is making cookie recipes. They put the dry ingredients for the recipe into a jar. Then they attach the recipe.
