    I read your post and some of the responses. I have too tried the four square method with no success. One year I tried power writing with no success. The only thing that seems to work in my class this year is the old brain storming technique. Writing down ideas about a topic and then choosing what ideas to use. Putting them into categories and then writing. I tried story webs one year and some of them could not get to the added details. It seemed to be structuring their thoughts too much. Most of my students this year if given a topic they they know about, and enjoy to talk about will write, write, write. Then in conferences we talk about how to put their thoughts in some order. I have trouble each and every year. It seems no matter what I do, it isnt't enough.
