    Discussion Groups

When I did my Boards on this topic, I had the children in small groups discussing seminar questions (higher order discussion questions) that I had prepared on slavery (we were doing an integrated unit based around Freedom Train, a book about Harriet Tubman).

You could probably come up with some great questions in your Nat. American unit for them to discuss. Through their discussion, you can demonstrate how your children are building a community through their discussion. i.e. which members are speaking up for the first time, how they are interacting with each other, etc.

One more thing, I gave individual students the questions in advance so they could write down notes and have a chance to develop an opinion and have something to share when they met with their group. Then, they added to their notes and wrote a reflection when they were done. All of this I used to show as samples.

    Hope this helps.
