I agree with limiting the warnings also. The kids will test you, so you have got to make it cool to be on the right track. The kids may say that life was fine when their teacher was there, but kids can be fickle, and the
truth may be that the management was not set up before you got the class. As long as you have a system in place, and remain consistent with it, the rest will work out. Sixth graders like to please, and they will come around. Here is my system:
I give out individual raffle tickets to students who are doing a good job throughout the day. We have a raffle at the end of each week.
When
students are not behaving, I have them owe 5 minutes of recess. If it happens more than once in a week, they fill out a "think sheet" that goes home to parents to be signed and returned.
