Warm-ups are a good idea. You could start the first few minutes with a geography warm-up. Sort of the way we do Daily Oral Language. Do a Daily Oral Geography. The warm-up is an especially good idea if you are going to work with middle school students who change classes. You can get them settled in just a few minutes if you have something on an overhead for them to do while you take attendance. We were actually required to do warm-ups at the middle school where I worked.

After the warm-up, you can go to the book. I try to give mine the opportunity to do projects, too. We have done group newspapers. Each member of the group contributes an article to the newspaper. The group publishes it. The kids have also made up skits to present to the class. Middle school students are quite inventive, and since they are older they are capable of doing so much more than the younger kids.
