Clip to ScrapBook
I use the Cinderella theme to introduce research and use of reference books. I begin the unit by reading the original Perriault story of Cinderella. Students each read 1 Cinderella story from another country. (our library
has about 25 different Cinderella stories) They compare and contrast it to the original. (Venn diagram) Then they must use the encyclopedia, atlas and nonfiction books on countries to learn more about that country. In addition, they must answer a few questions that ask why the story is important to the culture of that country. Students also list the important characters and highlights
of the story. Final assessment is their presentation to the class, explaining where the story took place, show on a map, atlas or globe where the country is located and explain the story as it relates to their research. The rubric that follows requires the students to find out as much about the country their story originates from and to present a clear and organized report.
