discipline
By susan

Clip to ScrapBook
I have found, as an earlier poster suggested, that classes thrive on being busy. By "busy," I don't mean busywork, but meaningful engagement. When I know exactly what I want to have happen in the day (this doesn't mean you
shouldn't be flexible with your plan as you move through your day), the kids have no time or inclination to get into mischief with me or with each other. When I haven't thought out what I want to accomplish with them and how, that's when chaos takes over. So above all, respect them and their time.

I recommend you read Alfie Kohn's "Punished by Rewards." Basically, it's better not to

get to the point where you feel you need to discipline anybody -- if everyone is doing something productive, what's to discipline? And the true rewards come for students when they accomplish things they are proud of -- that beats a pencil or a piece of candy any day.

Best of luck to you.

Susan
