discipline By susan

I have found, as an earlier poster suggested, that classes thrive on being busy. By "busy," I don't mean busywork, but meaningful engagement. When I know exactly what I want to have happen in the day (this doesn't mean you| shouldn't be flexible with your plan as you move through your day), the kids have no time or inclination to get into mischief with me or with each other. When I haven't thought out what I want to accomplish with them and how, that's when chaos takes over. So above all, respect them and their time. I recommend you read Alfie Kohn's "Punished by Rewards." Basically, it's better not to |
| get to the point where you feel you need to discipline anybody -- if everyone is doing something productive, what's to discipline? And the true rewards come for students when they accomplish things they are proud of -- that beats a pencil or a piece of candy any day.Best of luck to you. Susan
