I have tried various things that work with my 3rd graders. I don't sotp teaching but just walk around to their desk and stand by them. That will stop them immediately. Also, if this has happened more thatn once, then I just put a check in their agenda(which is on their desk opened at all times) without stopping what I'm doing. I have also changed my voice to a whisper and they will look to see what is happening. I have even stopped on occasion and just sat there. I have even said (when it has happened too much), "Oh I'm sorry Julie, I didn't mean to interupt your discussion. I'm sure it is more important than my teaching" (I haven't had to do that but about twice this year).I am moving around the room at all times, unless it is crucial I be right at the board for the lesson. This cuts down on a lot!
