I have tried various things that work with my 3rd graders. I don't sotp teaching but just walk around to their desk and stand by them. That will stop them immediately. Also, if this has happened more thatn once, then I just put a check in their agenda(which is on their desk opened at all times) without stopping what I'm doing. I have also changed my voice to a whisper and they will look to see what is happening. I have even stopped on occasion and just sat there. I have even said (when it has happened too much), "Oh I'm sorry Julie, I didn't mean to interupt your discussion. I'm sure it is more important than my teaching" (I haven't had to do that but about twice this year).

I am moving around the room at all times, unless it is crucial I be right at the board for the lesson. This cuts down on a lot!
