I too dread sitting down to a pile of papers. At least we're not highschool teachers... my physics teacher friend does hours every weekend. I don't let myself bring much home on nights/weekends- 1/2 hour tops. Instead, I come in earlier to do it and try to get it done during my breaks.

I try to stagger my marking- only collect their journals monthly, for e.g. I take a lot up in class and try to mark while they are working (i.e. walk around during math giving assistance and also checking yesterday's work). I try to only mark what I have to, and as a result, I should probably mark more, but I figure that it's not worth it to either myself or the students.

Also, I will occasionally ask a student to mark (the ones who like to- objective things like spelling).

This is when a class of 20 is sure nicer than a class of 30! I'm waiting for the year when I won't have more than 25 students...
