    I love contractions!

It's true, I do, and so do my first graders. We play a contractions game when I teach contractions, and I leave it out on the counter so kids can play it in their spare time, too. I write contractions in blue on 10 index cards, and the corresponding words in red on the other 10 cards (I have 20 kids). I mix them up, pass them out to the kids, and they have to go around the room, looking for the kid who has the corresponding card. For example, the child with "we've" is looking for the child with "we have." Having the cards in different colors is a big help... blue looks for red, and red looks for blue. If there is an odd number of kids that day, then I have one of the cards and kids can partner with me. Then, the kids sit down with their partners, and they have to tell me what the two words are, what the contraction is, and what letter or letters are missing. They absolutely adore this game.
