    Hi Melissa,

I have been teaching 5th grade for many years now and we always do a few presentations a year. Our first one is a holiday show and we make it perfecttly clear that we only want the kids that are interested in being in the show to stand up on stage and practice. The kids who show no interest in the show we take to another room or area and have them make decorations for the show. We have found this to be a great compromise to the show and teachers and students seem happy. The students still feel involved, yet are not up on stage. Usually, the next two presentation nights are packed with kids because they hear the students who participated talking it up. Fifth grade seems to be an inbetween year. They want to be hugged and loved yet independent. Try not forcing them to be in it and see what happens. You can't cancel! The parents and students really will remember it for years to come.

Good luck and hang in there.
