Your strategies are fine and I totally agree that you need some leverage untill you've built up a rapport with a class. I think my response was provoked by a recent experience when a sub was providing WAY too many rewards
for behavior that should have been a basic expectation for my kids. When I came back they wanted me to keep giving extra recess for things that are just basic. I would never expect a sub to call parents but leaving me a note is a great help as I will report the bad behavior to the parents myself. When I have children in my class who are known behavior issues I always let the planning room
supervisor and other support staff know when I will be gone so they can offer support to the sub if neded. An alternative to a candy reward for little ones is to keep a shhet of stikers (gold stars) and reward "gold star workers" with one - for some reason all my kids like them stuck on their forehead (go figure). I like your little dog idea!
