I have first graders and usually do one story a week with them. I use Scott Foresman reading series but any series would work with this plan.

Mondays; Whole class instruction. Introduce story, vocabulary, skills, spelling pre test.

Tuesday-Thursday Groups/Seatwork and Center. I have three reading groups I have bunch of seat work to be done to reinforce skills, spelling practice,/ It can consist of worksheets, boardwork, journal writing, etc. When the kids are finished with all the written work they may go to their center. I work with each groups from 20-30 minutes each. At groups we work on oral reading. skill lessons, comprehension work. By Thursday each group has finished the story so by Friday I have testing plus related enrichment activities. Usually these consist of writing activies like short stories, letter writing or what ever goes with the story. First grade is tough in the beginning because they can not read much and have to have lots of help. I do have an aide to work with this but before I did have an aide I used volunteer parents to keep them on task.
