    Prizes and Parties

At the last school I taught at (different one now), they really went all out on parties. They would bring in a story teller from the arts and humanities council and have popcorn one quarter. They did a 50s theme party another quarter with ice cream floats and great music. They would ask kids to bring gently used items and have a store where the kids could spend their points to buy things. (The PTA would donate a certain amount for each party. This would allow the committee to go buy things too.) The final party was the highly anticipated water party. Water balloons, water guns, etc. It really motivated the kids. It was a schoolwide program where the students had to meet their AR goal to go. Where I am now, they do a store stocked mainly with candy, pop, and things from Oriental Trading Co. All students can spend their points on the designated day. THey just need their points slip that is put in the teacher's mailbox. The kids aren't too motivated to read at this place. They don't push the AR thing too much...just Book It where teachers set goals differently.
