slavery
By Barb Masters

Clip to ScrapBook
We do a neat activity after studying slavery that involves all of the teachers in the school. Before the activity I ask teachers who would like to participate (I also include secretaries, librarians, lunch ladies, janitors,
etc.) They become the slave catchers or a conductor on the underground railroad. I divide the students into groups who go to the classrooms and ask the teachers to sign their sheet to help them reach Canada. They keep going until they are stopped by a slavecatcher or send them back to the plantation. (class) They have one minute to return. I send groups out every three minutes. The
groups are allowed to let the other groups know if they were successful in having a "conductor" sign their sheet or those who were slavecatchers, they warn not to go in. When everyone returns, we discuss why some groups were more successful than others. It helps students to realize just how difficult it was for slaves to reach freedom. If a group gets all of their sheet signed, I give them a small treat for success. If you are interested, e-mail me and I will send you the forms I use.
