student teaching w/ 6 kids By Alison M.

I've been student teaching for 10 weeks now & have 6 kids of my own- ages 1,3, K, 2nd grade, 4th grade, 7th grade, & it's hard! I study & plan at night, teach & clean all day, & am very short tempered with my own family| because of stress & lack of sleep (I am also in a master's program). I keep going because I love being in the classroom, I like to teach, & I know student teaching won't last forever. Also- we need the income when I'm eventually earning some money!! My kids have gone thru my undergraduate years with me (I graduated this Spring), so they know when & why they don't see mom much. A few | | tips- do bring your kids to see your school & classroom (when no students are there, & with master teacher's ok)so they can see what you're doing. Test your lessons on them & ask them for help or ideas- it gets them to be involved. Try to eat as a family still as much as you can. Network with other student teachers, this is a huge help, as I've found, you really need someone who knows what you have to go thru in th eclassroom. Good-luck!
