I am guessing by your 'when' that you mean during the school day. The entire class does have a copy of the book. I use my bonus points to provide each student with a copy of the novel. I do the studies during my reading block. I read the book aloud to the whole group, but when they come to small groups we re-read certain pages to reinforce skills. Students are alllowed to read ahead as much as they want but they do have to complete all the activities with the stories as they are assigned. If timing is right with the study we might have guest readers in to read 2 or 3 chapters. For Charlotte's Web I have had farmers come and for Flat Stanley I had an International sales respresentative come and read and share some of her travels which leads to compare and contrast, etc. In the past I have had a pastry chef from a local hotel come and read and share some of their sweets for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The kids really do get involved in the novels and it gives me a break from the routine. Hope this wasn't too wordy.
