I don't know how much help I can be, but I use a TON of picture books to introduce topics. I would first introduce the concept, maybe define it whole class. Then, whole class I would read a particular picture book that dealt with the topic, like If you Give a Mouse a Cookie for cause and effect. I use lots of post-its to mark in the books where items occur. Then small group, have them look through other intentionally chosen picture books and mark then with post-its. This way they are "working" with the text. Finally, for independent, I usually do have a worksheet or a journal entry.

For prefix/root/suffix, I introduced the concept with puzzle pieces. Each piece had a part of the word. We match the parts on the magnet board. Then, I had each group create puzzle pieces for atleast 5 words of their choice. Some of them had like 7 puzzle pieces for one word. They loved it. Then independently I had them create a 5 point paragraph using at least 10 words that had a prefix or suffix.

Ok now I am rambling....let me know if you need more.
