Hi Terri! Hope you had nice holidays and aren't working too hard on Nat'l Board stuff, lol!

Funny someone mentioned Marcia Freeman - I have heard nothing but outstanding response from all who have used her. This is certainly
my next "must have".

I wrote my Master's thesis on "The Most Effective Writing Practices for Emerging Readers" and read a slew of books. The most comprehensive and helpful books on Writer's Workshop I found at that time were by Donald Graves and Lucy McCormick Calkins.

Lucy is so personable - she uses anecdotes both as a teacher and a mother. She is easy to read and her passion

is evident. I got a lot out of The Art of Teaching Writing and Lucy also wrote one of my all time favorite books - Raising Lifelong Learners. It's my number 1 recommendation to parents and has deeply impacted my own parenting and teaching.

One last note - my school has adopted the Step Up To Writing curriculum this year. While I don't think it is a program that can be used exclusively in K and 1 classes, it does have very good explicit strategies that have been useful.

Happy New Year!
Trish
