Heather,

Your post sounds identicial to one that I could have written, except I'm a 5th grade spec ed teacher.

In an inclusive setting, I think reading is one of the most difficult subjects to accomodate. We've had full
inclusion for 3 yrs. and have struggled with reading the entire time.

One of the strategies that we've tried this yr is to break down into "Reading Clubs." We have the students in mixed readiness groups of between 4-5. However, I have the lowest group of about 7.

While I work with my group, the gen ed teacher circulates around the room to see that the other students are on-task

(reading and doing their "jobs" for the day).

I usually start out with vocab flashcards of sight words from the story that the students struggle with. There are many different things we do with the flashcards before reading. (Memory, guess the word, etc.).

I also have an audio tape of the story that the students listen to later in the day, if they want to.

We've been doing this for about 5 weeks now. So far, so good!

I hope this gives you a few ideas.
