Parents...
By Diana M., 6th grade

Clip to ScrapBook
My partner and I have a student and parent this year in which we were warned about from last year's teachers. They were constantly embroiled with case conferences, documentation, changes in the IEP--extra, unneccessary work.
We feared the same this year. However, it has been pleasant with this parent. For some reason, she is beginning to realize that her son is responsible for his homework and behavior. She also learned very quickly this year that he plays her against us and vice-versa. We remain in email communications, and force the student to take responsibility for everything he does. She brings
him to any confefences we have, at our request, and they are much more productive and not requiring more work on our part. The fifth grade teachers are envious at our amicable relationship with the parent. Even the principal is pleased this year not to be dealing with the mother every other day.

I believe our success is due to our stating to all parents at the beginning of the year during our parent night, that it was their child's responsibility to complete all work on time, not the parents or us. It has been working so far. (Let's hope I don't jinx myself now!)
