Rainy Day
By Amanda K.

Clip to ScrapBook
My first graders just adore Heads Up Seven Up. It gets the whole class involved. They want to play it all the time, but I try to just reserve it for indoor recess so they won't get tired of it.

If you don't know how
to play, here's how. Pick 7 kids to stand at the front of the room. Turn out the lights, and call, "Heads Down, Thumbs Up!" Kids put their heads down, close their eyes, and put out their fists, with thumbs outstretched (the hitchhiking position, although of course I don't tell them that). The seven kids go around and each tap one person on the thumb. If you get picked, you put your
thumb down. When the 7 kids are at the front of the room, you call, "Head Up, Seven Up!" Turn the lights on, and the chosen kids stand up and try to guess who picked them. If they guess right, then they become one of the seven and the other person sits down. They might try to cheat, but I handle that by telling them that if they know someone who cheats all the time, then just don't pick them. That stops cheating pretty quick because everyone wants to get picked.
