    specials

We have had word from the governor that we will probably be losing art and music next year, and we already know from the county that they are cutting PE teachers, so our kids will only have PE once every two weeks. They are also cutting kindergarten parapros (to 1/2 day). This will mean we will lose our planning time and our duty-free lunch. I came to elementary school from the middle school. In middle school we had 2 hours of planning a day. It was hard to get used to 40 minutes a day of planning, but now I will have to adjust to NO planning time. Our governor is gunho NCLB, but he is snatching the rug out from under the schools by cutting the budget 500+ million. The local schools have no choice but to cut programs, otherwise they'd have to lay off classroom teachers (we are already overcrowded, so this is not possible).

No this is only partially related to original post, but I think we all ought to count our blessings that we have any break at all right now, because in this new academic climate we may very well find in a couple of years all specials will be a thing of the past.
