I have 5th graders in a 4th-8th grade middle school. I am at my wit's end on how to keep them quiet! When they decide that a lesson is social hour and it's a good majority of the class, I take one minute at a time from their recess (scheduled for the last 30 minutes of the day) and they owe me that many minutes of quiet working time (or I just keep going with the lessons) until they have served the time they took from their learning. Walking through the halls is a huge problem too though. This week we've been 15 minutes late for lunch EVERY DAY because when I line them up, they won't shut their mouths. I sit them back down if they're noisy, they've had to line up boy-girl-boy-girl, any individuals I catch have to flip their cards (and possibly earn a silent lunch), and I remind them every day on the way to lining up for lunch that unless they earned themselves a silent lunch, they are about to go have 30 minutes of talk time if they keep it at a reasonable volume. They consistently talk and shove each other in line and basically disregard everything that I say concerning the matter. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
