Going through same thing today! By Ditto

I know what you mean! This is my 1st year at 6th grade, came from 7 years in 3rd. My class is very social and lately arguementative. I, too, have tried the things you mention. My V.P. was in 6th for many years and asked| her for an idea. She said she would give her kids 5 min. of "chat time" in between subjects or during transition time. I am going to try this tomorrow. I'll set my timer and after we've worked hard and long I will give them 5 min. to chat quietly. When the timer goes off we will get back to work. If goes well, I may entice them with another "chat time" later in the day. Another | | thing I tried this week is to put a Loss of Points note taped to their desk. We are going on a major 3 day trip to Sonora, CA and students are on a behavior contract. They start with 20 points and lose 5-20 depending on the infraction. One student lost her 5 for attitude day before, but it did not seem to be a big deal. We'll see when she returns the signed note. I can't wait to hear suggestions everyone has. I have been told Spring really hits the 6th graders. This is the tip of the iceberg.
