Cranking it up...
By tgs/sc/6

Clip to ScrapBook
I transferred states after completing my student teaching, and was a bit cautious my first term. Many of my students achieved high grades, simply because I was still struggling with what I could realistically expect of my
students, and because I was learning different standards and curriculum in a new state.

Of course, parents were pleased first term, because the majority of my students earned B's and C's. However, with NCLB and SC Pact scores being tied to student retainage, I felt the need to crank it up. I did it gradually over the entire 2nd term, and those students who I feel will be successful

on the end of the year state test, earned good grades. Those students of mine who are still behind, and who haven't mastered the 6th grade objectives, didn't earn such hot grades. We've been told by adminstration that too often, students earn A's and B's in school, but fail the state tests miserably. Then, parents get on the administration because "Suzy has earned B's all her school life, so why isn't she passing PACT?" I think it's a viable question for a parent to ask.

I'm not saying that I make it impossible to earn a good grade, but in order to earn it, work has to be completed according to the standards I am required to each.
