Congratulations on taking on such a wonderful project! I would suggest bright (but not bold)colrs, to make the room inviting. You may even be able to do some on-line research as to the best colors to use, most of us teachers
don't get the opportunity to pick & choose.
I have curtain valances on my windows made from children's print material with matching material velcroed to the front of the shelves. These "drapes" keep toys and suppplies out of sight. I "open" only certain toy shelves at a time, otherwise everything will end up off the shelves!
Hang Posters on the walls. They can include educational
ones with letters, colors and shapes and pictures of things children like: cars, animals, boats, trucks, kids, etc. Depending on what you plan to do with the children, you may wish to reserve some wall space for the children's art projects.
Some teachers will hang things (completed art projects)from the ceiling, but some children may find these distracting and over stimulating.
A CD/tape player may be a high priority item in a lot of spec ed rooms. Quite, classical music can have a calming effect. Some teachers like to use piano music, others guitar, & others symphonic. For sure a player will come in handy when you want to have a sing along!
Good Luck!
